What is the Nikon ECLIPSE Ts2?

The Nikon ECLIPSE Ts2 is a compact inverted routine microscope purpose-built for tissue culture and cell biology labs. Built on Nikon's CFI60 infinity optical system, it uses high-intensity, alignment-free LED illumination for Diascopic viewing, with the ECLIPSE Ts2-FL variant adding built-in LED Epi-fluorescence illumination configurable with up to 3 fluorescence LED units. Streamlined front-panel controls, an optional high-performance mechanical stage, and Nikon's unique Emboss Contrast technique — which delivers pseudo-3D, glare-free images of thick specimens like iPS cells without costly optics — make the Ts2 a versatile, space-efficient choice for everyday culture observation and documentation.

Key Features

Efficient and Comfortable Observation

LED light sources and built-in Diascopic/Epi-fluorescence illumination systems reduce setup time and let researchers concentrate on the work in front of them, not the microscope.

Built-In Illumination Cuts Setup Time

With Diascopic and Epi-fluorescence illumination systems seamlessly built into the microscope body, there's no external light source to align or set up. Researchers move straight from switching the microscope on to observing their culture, session after session.

Faster, Brighter Images With LED Illumination

The LED light source is alignment-free, resulting in faster setup and consistent results session to session. LEDs also eliminate frequent bulb replacements, saving time and money over the microscope's working life.

The new Contrast Shield (optional) blocks ambient room light, providing an easy and cost-effective way to achieve high signal-to-noise fluorescence observation even in a brightly lit culture room.

Streamlined Operation

Control buttons are intuitively located for a streamlined workflow. Commonly used controls, such as on/off and Diascopic/Epi-fluorescence switching, sit on the front panel for easy reach. Buttons for Diascopic or Epi-fluorescence control are zoned to the left and right sides of the body respectively, eliminating confusion and improving workflow efficiency.

Contrast Technique

"Emboss Contrast" Contrasting Technique

A newly developed, cost-effective observation method that gives thick, halo-prone specimens pseudo-three-dimensional, glare-free clarity — without costly optics.

Pseudo-3D, Glare-Free Imaging Without Costly Optics

Emboss Contrast is Nikon's cost-effective optical technique which does not require costly optics. Using just a brightfield objective lens and two contrast sliders, it provides pseudo-three-dimensional, glare-free images for thick specimens — such as iPS cells — which would normally suffer from halos under conventional phase contrast methods.

Emboss Contrast is also compatible with both glass and plastic culture chambers, making it a versatile observation technique for everyday routine work.

LED-Based High-Quality Diascopic & Epi-Fluorescence Observation

Two models are available to meet your needs — the Diascopic illumination ECLIPSE Ts2, and the Diascopic-plus-Epi-fluorescence ECLIPSE Ts2-FL.

High-Intensity LED, Uniform Field Brightness

High-intensity LED sources are employed for both Diascopic and Epi-fluorescence illumination. The built-in fly-eye lens ensures uniform brightness across the entire field of view for both illumination modes.

Brightfield Observation

Standard on both the Ts2 and Ts2-FL, delivering clear CFI60 optical images across the full field of view — no extra accessories required.

Apodized Phase Contrast (APC)

A type of phase contrast observation with reduced halo, thanks to Nikon's unique lens coating — giving clearer specimen edges than conventional phase contrast.

Phase Contrast Observation

Precentered or centering PH sliders are available for 10X, 20X, and 40X objectives, revealing unstained, transparent specimens in high contrast.

Emboss Contrast

Nikon's unique pseudo-3D, glare-free contrasting technique for thick specimens, using a brightfield objective plus two contrast sliders (10X, 20X, 40X objectives available).

Epi-Fluorescence Observation

Available on the Ts2-FL only: a built-in epi-fluorescence filter turret configures up to 3 filter cubes with a fly-eye lens for uniform-brightness fluorescence imaging.
